Walk Update:
The pedestrian bridge over Werribee River, which connects Werribee Park to Werribee Regional Park is closed due to flood damage, with repairs expected to take place in mid-2025. Best to save this walk for a later date and enjoy the beautiful gardens of Werribee Park Mansion instead.
Step back in time and explore the stately grounds of the Mansion, admire the manicured greens of Werribee Park Golf Course and follow the Werribee River past the gnarled River Red Gums that have stood for hundreds of years.
Begin the walk at Werribee Park, where you can park your car in the visitor car park. Walk through the main entrance gates and follow the signs towards the old farm buildings behind the Mansion. Take time to explore the historic buildings and your make way towards the fence line at the back.
Between the men’s huts and community garden, you’ll spot the gate and sign to continue towards Werribee Regional Park.
When you come to the T intersection turn left to walk across the boardwalk under the gums – keep an eye out for fallen branches.
From here the trail winds along the fence line of Werribee Park Golf Course before a pedestrian bridge takes you across Werribee River.
Turn right and take the following right to reach the picnic area with lush grass, picnic tables and shady gums.
From the picnic area, you can walk a little further to see the Old Bluestone Ford which was built in 1835 and was the first crossing of the Werribee River, forming part of the original Melbourne to Geelong road
Return the way that you came, on this one-way route back to the Mansion
If you’re looking to add a little extra to your walk, rather than turning right at the picnic area, keep walking along the trail and use the pedestrian boardwalk to reach the escarpment.
At the top, turn left and follow the vehicle track which will take you on a short loop along the Werribee River, before returning back to the picnic area.
As you follow the line of the river keep an eye out for whistling kites and glimpses of K Road Cliffs in the distance.
Snakes and other reptiles may sun themselves in warmer weather, so keep an eye on your surroundings and enjoy the sound of all the native birds along the river.
You can also do this walk in reverse and park at Werribee Regional Park via Farm Road (gravel).
Dogs are not permitted in Werribee Park, but can be walked on lead in Werribee River Park (if you enter via Farm Road)
